What Webb expects from the group of Giants “grinders” in 2023 originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
With 107 best franchise wins in 2021, the Giants went into the 2022 MLB season with high hopes, but failed to achieve them.
With the 2023 campaign launch less than two weeks away, San Francisco’s ace and Opening day starters Logan Webb expects the Giants to get back on track for success.
“We have a lot of people who are just grinders,” Webb told 95.7 The Game.Willard & Dibs” on Friday. “A lot of really good baseball players who had really, really, really good seasons that maybe got injured the year before or maybe had a bad year.
“I think we’re just excited to just come out and prove people wrong. When we talk about it, we’re not — I don’t think we’re as far away as we might have thought.”
The 26-year-old homegrown talent considers this season a clean slate after an odd 2022 in which the Giants finished .500 and third in the NL West for the first time in franchise history.
“We won 107 in 2021, right, and last year was just — I think it was more just a bunch of other things that contributed,” Webb said. “You lose some people and we had some injuries last year and we just need to get back to good baseball and do the little things right.
“I sometimes think we got away from that last year and maybe a little complacent, but I’m excited. The lads are excited.”
With free-agent additions like outfielders Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto, as well as returnees Joc Pederson, Wilmer Flores, JD Davis and Mike Yastrzemski to name a few, Webb envisions a 2023 San Francisco team that bids lots of strong potential. And while Spring Training Injuries have held some, like Hanigerback, the hope is that the squad will be fairly healthy at or shortly after the start of the season.
“I know we have some little grudges for some of the guys right now, but I think everyone will be sane by March 30th, so I’m excited,” Webb said. “We have a great group of guys and there are some thugs who I think are going to have monster years. Finally healthy, Conforto, Haniger and some of these guys… It’s going to be great.”

Webb will take on the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on March 30 to face off against Aaron Judge, who escaped the Giants by free hand this offseason.
But based on his anticipation for the months ahead, Webb is more than happy with the group the Giants have assembled this season.
