In the last mock draft, Joey Porter Jr. joins the AFC East

We’re just under a month away from the 2023 NFL Draft, and there are plenty of prospects to keep on your radar from Penn State Football.

We have seen several mock drafts featuring Nittany Lions included in first round mock drafts. One of those Penn State players is cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

Porter Jr. has been ridiculed by several teams in the league. Two of the most popular teams seem to be those Pittsburgh Steelers and the Detroit Lions.

In a recent mock draft by CBS sportsPorter Jr. is mocked for that New England Patriots with the 14th overall victory.

Let’s break down how Porter Jr. fits in with the Patriots.

First, Devin McCourty has retired this offseason, and the Patriots will need a true number one corner for their high school.

Speaking of which, if you want to talk about a true number one cornerback prospect in this year’s draft, you could certainly make a case for Porter Jr. being at the top of this list. When you talk about a general cornerback prospect, Georgia’s Kelee Ringo comes to mind. But what will be his primary position on the next level?

Back to Porter Jr., the Patriots need a true number one cornerback in their back room.

They have re-signed Jonathan Jones for another two years. Aside from him, however, the Patriots don’t have a player who could be a focal point in their back room.

We say that about Porter Jr. all the time, but that’s because it’s pretty easy to see. He’s everything you want in an NFL corner. He brings to the table the combination of size, speed and athleticism, traits that would be key in the Patriots’ defense.

It’s also worth noting that the Patriots will also be bringing another name back to their side room. That’s Jabrill Peppers security. The Patriots brought him back on a two-year contract.

The Patriots also have cornerback Jalen Mills, whom they brought back with a restructured contract. So the depth in the Patriots’ cornerback room is certainly there. But there’s a small question mark over who their true number one cornerback is.

If the Patriots were to draft a corner early in this year’s draft, Joey Porter Jr. would make a lot of sense for them as it would mean an immediate boost to a Patriots secondary room in need of a true number one corner.
