Garcia called a “clown” and Mickelson a “maniac” as couples hit golf at LIV

Fred Couples smiles

The normally gentle one Fred couples has it in for “Nutsack”. Phil Mickelson and “all those other clowns” taking PGA Tour farewell photos on their way to joining LIV golf.

Couples was a guest speaker at the PGA Tour Champions breakfast ahead of this week’s Hoag Classic in Newport Beach – where he currently resides – directing digs at Mickelson and Sergio Garcia.

The 63-year-old, who is also a two-time Hoag Classic winner, used his speech to defend the PGA Tour and launched a scathing attack, taunting several players who had decided to join LIV golf.

Couples called Mickelson a “crazy guy” during his speech, but added that he still likes him while also expressing his anger at “all these other clowns, like Sergio (Garcia)” complaining about the PGA Tour before he came to LIV.

As such a long-term establishment of the PGA TourCouples seems to have taken much of the criticism quite personally, as several outgoing players who joined LIV decided to attack their former employer on the way out.

Couples made it clear that he doesn’t blame any of them for taking the Saudi fortune to gamble Gregory Norman – but not accepting that some of them burned down their bridges as they left.

“I have no problem with LIV,” Couples said, as reported Orange County Registry. “What has been my problem with tweeting every now and then is what these guys say when they go to the LIV Tour.

“Just go to the LIV Tour, but stop blasting something I’ve been involved with for 42 years. That’s my problem. They’re all beating the PGA Tour, and that affects me a bit.

“If you give Phil Mickelson $200 million at the age of 52 to turn 74 and 75, God bless you.”

The 15-time PGA Tour winner and 1992 Masters champion added that he found it hard work watching the latest LIV show on The CW Network.

“It was a few weeks ago on the CW or whatever that channel is that everyone’s laughing at,” he joked.

“I turned it on three times. It was so bad I couldn’t even see anyone I liked. They don’t show them. Who won last? I do not even know.”

It was actually Charles Howell III who claimed that $4 million prize money in Mexico in the opener of LIV Golf, but that doesn’t matter to Couples, who were asked about the future of the new company and replied: “I’m funky now; I don’t care if it survives.”
