Led by Frost’s 2-goal night, Flyers underline 5-1-1 homestand originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
In a matchup between two forward-thinking clubs from the bottom seven, the Flyers ended an impressive home stand with a 3-2 win over the Canadiens at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday night.
Morgan Frost led by two goals for the Flyers (29-32-12), who extended their best points streak of the season to six games (5-0-1).
Owen Tippett scored an empty net.
John Tortorella’s club started the season 5-1-1, scoring 4.00 goals per game.
The Flyers entered the home round, scoring 2.55 goals per game, 30th in the NHL.
In the midst of a month of March heralding changing times for the Rebuild Club, Tortorella went on to discuss the bigger picture of the franchise.
“We want to get to the point [level of the] other teams in the [Philadelphia] Sports complex, we want to crank it up like those teams did, fill the building back up, get it [the fans] Think of the really good things that happen at the end of the year: playoffs. And that’s our goal,” said Tortorella on Tuesday morning. “But there is more pain. For me it’s good pain. I think next year hopefully there will be a different level of pain. Because I think there are levels and then you get to the really good part of the process of seeing what it’s going to be like.”
For NHL Draft Lottery supporters, the Flyers are now four points ahead of the Canadiens (30-39-6) and have two games in hand.
“I think teams tried, but it’s two teams out of the playoffs,” Tortorella said. “I think that’s what it looked like tonight. And it’s the first we’ve experienced. It’s not an effort – it was just an ugly game. Really neither team has produced a whole lot, but you have to try to find a way to win those games and we did it.”
The Flyers went 1-1-1 against Montreal in the three-game regular season series.
• Shortly after a power play had elapsed, Kevin Hayes found Frost with a fine drive across the goal area as the Flyers took a 1-0 lead early in the second period.
2:15 minutes before the end of the third period, Frost gave the go-ahead with a great shot in the transition game.
“I was thinking about pass most of the time – like I usually do – and then I kind of saw that the second player was going to backcheck too much,” Frost said. “So I switched it around at the last minute and ended up shooting.”
Since the calendar switched to 2023, Frost leads the Flyers in points with 24 (nine goals, 15 assists) in 36 games.
“Positioning, posture, fights — just a 200-footer,” Tortorella said of Frost’s areas of improvement. “We know he has skill. We have to keep seeing the skill. But for a coach to put a player on the ice that he’s not sure about, those other things have to be solid. And I think he’s got himself really improved there.” .”
With 52 points this season, Hayes is four away from setting a new career high.
The Flyers scored three or more goals in every home stand game.
For a while on Tuesday evening it looked like it missed out on 21-year-old prospect Tyson Foerster.

• Carter Hart was out on the ice for the morning skate and was scheduled to start, but the Flyers kept him out of the net with a lower body injury.
The 24-year-old applies every day.
Felix Sandstrom started in Hart’s place and finished with 27 saves for his second career win.
“It’s starting to click more for me,” said the 26-year-old. “I’m feeling better and better. It’s fun, it’s great to be out there and it’s great to play with the lads. I look forward to every game.”
Montreal tied the game 1-1 in the second half when the Flyers failed to clear a ricocheting puck from a dangerous area. Brendan Gallagher lunged at it and fired a live shot past Sandstrom.
The Canadians’ second goal came late when their net was empty.
The Flyers helped their own cause by staying out of the penalty box all night.
Montreal goaltender Cayden Primeau, the son of former Flyers captain Keith Primeau, stopped 24 shots.
• Nicolas Deslauriers returned to the line-up after missing the last two games with a torso injury.
