Nats fans have to hope their rebuild was accelerated by last summer’s franchise-changing move from Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres. Washington received a wealth of young talent – Man, why does this sound so familiar to you – who have a chance to develop at the major league level, including left-hander Mackenzie Gore, shortstop CJ Abrams and catcher Keibert Ruiz (who has already signed a $50m extension).

The nats don’t push everything on them; They’ve signed several veterans on short-term contracts, including former Tiger Jeimer Candelario. The third baseman, who was absolutely terrible last season with .633 OPS just one season after leading the majors with 42 doubles, has not gotten off to a good start this spring. Before joining the Dominican Republic for the WBC, he hit .227 with two doubles and no homers in seven games with the Nats.
