Game Notes: For a team that’s rebuilding, the Tigers don’t have many open competitions at camp. In fact, they started spring with the rotation — usually the bane of a conversion club’s existence — practically set, with Eduardo Rodriguez, Matthew Boyd, Michael Lorenzen, Spencer Turnbull and Matt Manning earmarked for launch.
Just one problem: Manning did pretty poorly in his first three starts this spring. He gave up a run in two innings (against the nominally bad Pittsburgh Pirates) the first time, then gave up as many runs (four) as batters (four) against the Red Sox in the 6 scoreless second inning) and followed on Saturday with five runs allowed over three innings against the Atlanta Braves. His main rival, left-hander Joey Wentz, has been far from perfect this spring, so Manning isn’t necessarily fighting for a roster spot against the Yankees today…but a couple of scoreless innings and an effective slider would probably go a long way in settling the questions.
The Yankees, meanwhile, will send right-hander Domingo Germán up the hill; his ERA is a bit high considering how dominant he has been this spring; In 7 2/3 innings over three starts, he allowed 10 strikeouts, a walk and five hits. Germán was far from being a strikeout machine in his injury-cut 2022 with just 58 in 72 1/3 innings, so maybe he’s finally rediscovering the form that led him to 153 strikeouts in 143 innings. while he went 18-4 in 2019.
After Friday’s game, the Tigers head to Jupiter to take on the St. Louis Cardinals at the start of a two-game road trip. The Yankees, meanwhile, return to the Tampa Bay area to face the Blue Jays in Dunedin on Saturday afternoon.
