Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is in full-on recruiting mode outside of spring football practice this month as a number of top prospects in the 2024 cycle begin to narrow down their options heading into the summer months, and on Tuesday, 5. Star wide receiver Mike Matthews released his much-anticipated top 12 program listing, which just so happened to include the Aggies.
With no indication that this is his final list ahead of his undetermined commitment date, Matthews includes the following schools: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, maroon, Colorado, U.S.C, Tennessee, LSUMissouri, Arkansas, State of Ohioand of course Texas A&M.
From Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia, Matthews is the 10th player and 4th wide receiver in the class of 2024 and the 2nd player in Georgia and perhaps the most versatile athlete in the entire class. In scouting reports for 247sports analyst Andrew Ivins, Mike Matthews is just on the verge of becoming a two-way FBS-level player:
A talented two-way athlete who some colleges see as a long-term wide receiver while others consider him a future all-conference safety. After the breakout season as a sophomore, a Monster Junior campaign followed on offense when he averaged 21.5 yards per catch, averaged 1,030 yards, and nine touchdowns through the air in the Peach State’s highest grading. At one point he reported a basketball offer from the state of Mississippi and it’s pretty easy to see why as he is extremely coordinated in almost everything he does and always puts himself in a position to make a game. The long speed was a bit of a question mark at this point, but tested exceptionally well in the spring before 12th grade, clocking one of the fastest 40-yard dash times in a crowded camp outside of Atlanta. Duct tape also confirms the number as he constantly backs away from defenders and creates separation in deeper avenues. On the other side of the ball, he has flashed the ability to quickly close gaps and get to the catch point while playing more of a role in midfield. Will eventually have to pick a position but should be considered one of the best overall talents in the 2024 cycle considering how he’s moving to the edge. NFL upside down if he can keep advancing.
During his 2022 junior season as a wide receiver and safety, Matthews recorded 48 receptions for 1,031 yards and 10 TD on offense while totaling 23 tackles and 2 INTs on defense. Matthews has yet to visit Texas A&M, but something tells me a trip to College Station might be just around the corner sooner or later.
