Donald Trump recently said he would love for GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to run for the Senate.
The last three Senate hopefuls Trump has backed in Georgia have lost six straight contests.
Current Senate campaign chair Gary Peters is confident that Greene would also come up short.
While some Senate Democrats seemed shocked that they might find themselves on par with conservative bomb-thrower Marjorie Taylor Greene in the near future, the party’s current reelection leader rose to the challenge.
“She can do whatever she wants. Wherever she runs, we’ll beat her,” said Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan, who took a majority-decision seat as chair of the Democrat campaign arm of the Senate in 2022 and again took over the cycle in 2024, insiders told insiders.
Peters’ prediction puts him at odds with Donald Trump, who floated the idea of having the two-year House Republican shot in one of Georgia’s Democratic-controlled Senate seats during his tenure Campaign launch 2024 in Waco, Texas.
“I would fight like hell for you,” he said embattled former president said Greenewho has already endorsed his re-election bid and warmed up the audience MAGA love festivalover the weekend.
Trump’s recent recruiting efforts in the state have not worked so well.
His preferred candidates lost six neck-and-neck elections in the Peach State Senate in a 26-month span, including two general elections in 2020, two Special elections 2021 that produced a 50-50 Senate with a Democratic edge due to Vice President Kamala Harris’ tied vote and another general election and outflow in 2022 that earned incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock his first full term.
Warnock looked rather incredulous when Insider asked his opinion on Trump’s statements of support for a Greene Senate nomination.
“‘Show’ is the right word,” he said, shaking his head in disbelief as a subway car took him to the US Capitol.
Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, who is up for re-election in 2026, smiled as insiders mentioned Trump’s ad lib in Waco.
“I don’t think much about potential challengers,” Ossoff said as he strode toward the chamber. A few steps later he said, “Anyone can walk. And I will be ready.”
Whether walking the debate stage with Greene or another Trump-backed challenger, Ossof added that he doesn’t take anything for granted The South’s busiest battlefield.
“I have no doubt that Georgia will remain a highly competitive state,” he said.
That’s exactly the right attitude, Democratic strategist Rodell Mollieneau told Insider.
“Before Democrats start congratulating themselves three years in advance, let’s not forget that Hershel Walker received 49% of the general election vote last year,” said former adviser to then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and now a partner at the political consulting firm Rokk Solutions. wrote in an email. “In this state, we still have a lot to do to consolidate our success in the long term.”
