Donald Trump indicted; 1. Ex-President charged with crimes
Donald Trump has just been impeached. Here’s what happens next.
It is the first time a former US President has been indicted.
Rep. Katherine Clark, the Democratic Speaker of the US House of Representatives, whose district stretches from Melrose to Framingham, said the principle that no one is above the law is “fundamental to the strength and survival of democracy.”
“We must allow the trial to proceed unimpeded and free from any form of political interference or intimidation,” she said. “This is not a time for partisanship, but for all Americans to act peacefully and place their trust in the justice system.”
A rally is scheduled to take place on the steps of the Massachusetts State House on Friday, at which participants are expected to express their support for the “rule of law and allowing the judicial system to follow facts.” The 12:00 p.m. event is designed to send the message that “Trump is not above the law,” according to organizers.
Below is how Massachusetts elected officials are responding to the historic indictment.
Rep. Katherine Clark, Democratic Whip of the US House of Representatives
Rep. Jim McGovern
“Despite Trump’s absurd rhetoric, his indictment has nothing to do with politics. After examining the evidence, hearing witnesses, and considering the law, a grand jury ruled that he likely committed a crime. How could anyone be surprised? His campaign manager, deputy campaign manager, chief strategist, national security adviser, personal attorney and accountant are all convicted felons. Like a mafia boss, he surrounded himself with a cult of criminals who had to take the fall for him – and now the time has come.
“The fraudulent use of campaign funds as hush money to cover up an affair is illegal. So illegal that Trump’s own lawyer was jailed for handling the payments. Trump deserves his day in court, just like everyone else – but instead he is urging his supporters to protest the rule of law itself. His behavior is sick. In America, no one is above the law. Equal justice is more important than blind loyalty to a twice impeached, disgraced ex-president who led an insurgency after he could neither lie nor cheat to lose.”
