We no longer have to wonder who Marvel Studios will tap into to play Simon Williams. The MCU has found its star for the upcoming one Disney+ miracle man series and it’s a big name. It’s no surprise they chose one of Hollywood’s finest young actors, but we didn’t expect them to cast someone who is a huge part of the DCEU right now. Aquaman‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will take on double superhero franchise duty as one of Marvel Comics’ oldest Avengers. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Wonder Man for Marvel.
diversity reports Abdul-Mateen II (candy man, The Trial of Chicago 7) is Disney’s choice to play Wonder Man. The character will finally join the MCU with his own series. The show is just the latest major superhero role for the actor. Abdul-Mateen II not only played Black Manta alongside Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman, but also Dr. Manhattan HBO’s Guardian series.
Created by Stan Lee, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby, Simon Williams first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1964. Baron Zemo originally urged him to gain power. But Wonder Man hasn’t been a villain for so long. He is actually one of the oldest Avengers. (The seventh was introduced, for those scoring at home.) Williams also helped found it the West Coast squad of the group. However, as you can imagine Its actual comic story is far more complicated.
He is Vision’s “brother” who dated Wanda who once revived him and died on more than one occasion. While we don’t know exactly how he’ll be introduced in the MCU, we’ve previously speculated that it will be the Hollywood star/hero he’s best known as. The Disney+ series will see Sir Ben Kingsley returns as Trevor Slattery, the MCU’s most notorious actor. So it only makes sense to see him perform alongside Simon Williams. Additionally, TV line reports that Demetrius Grosse has come on board the series as Wonder Man’s brother and adversary Eric Williams, also known as the Grim Reaper. While Simon was the family darling, Eric turned to crime. In the comics, Grim Reaper wields a scythe that can put others in a coma. So Wonder Man from Yahya Abdul-Mateen II better watch out.
No wonder Marvel wanted a Wonder Man who is already a major Hollywood star/hero. Not everyone can play so many great superhero characters for so many franchises at the same time. We can’t wait to hear more about the show.
