Kelly Clarkson looks back at how it felt making the decision to divorce your ex-husband Brandon Blackstock after almost seven years of marriage.
The Grammy-winning talk show host appeared on a new episode of Angie Martinez IRL podcastin which she spoke about the split from Blackstock, with whom she shares two children: River Rose, 8, and Remington Alexander, 6.
“What does a divorce do to you? Because she needs to change you, right?” asked the host, 52.
“It tears you apart,” Clarkson, 40, explained, “anytime you fall in love with someone and it doesn’t work out.”
The Miss Independent singer continued, “I think the most difficult thing about the divorce thing – especially when it comes out and people think they know everything – is that it wasn’t an overnight decision.”
“Anyone who is divorced [knows]. Those were years of trying to make it work — not because I never wanted to be a part of anything to make it work,” Clarkson added. “I wanted to make it beautiful. I wanted to make it great. I wanted to do whatever I could, and sometimes that just doesn’t happen.”

Elsewhere in IRL Interview, Clarkson opened up about their children’s feelings about the divorceand notes that she makes it a ritual of checking on them and assessing their feelings.
“I ask my kids every night when we cuddle and put them to bed, ‘Are you happy? And if not, what could make you happier?’” Clarkson said. “Especially the last two years… it’s killing me [but] I want them to be honest, so I never say, “Oh god, don’t tell me that,” but often I do would be like, ‘I’m just really sad. I wish mommy and daddy were in the same house.” You’re really being honest. I’m raising that kind of person.”

“I find [it’s important to be] communicating with them and … not treating them like adults because they aren’t, but not treating them like a child,” she continued. “These are no small feelings. These are huge feelings, and these are huge emotions.”
