The ongoing civil trial over Gwyneth Paltrow’s 2016 ski collision ended for the day Tuesday, with the Oscar winner’s legal teams and Terry Sanderson, the retired optometrist, who accused her of hitting him, now reading Apple to 18 and , according to testimonies from Paltrow’s children Moses 16.
While none of the children Paltrow shares with ex-husband Chris Martin were present when the collision happened, they were asked about the events that happened immediately before and after. Both confirmed they were part of a group that also included Paltrow’s husband Brad Falchuk and their children, as well as several ski instructors that day at Deer Valley Ski Resort in Park City, Utah. The crash happened just as the group was heading out to lunch at the bottom of the runway.
According to her statement, Apple said her mother was upset about the incident.
“At lunch, she said he drove into her back, and she called him an A-hole that drove into her back,” Apple said. “I remember she was very excited about that, so she probably said something along those lines.”
When she pressed what she meant by frantic, Apple replied, “She was in shock. She was just very upset and in pain.”
The teenager resumed skiing after that, but her mother went to the spa.
“I never really see her that shaken up,” Apple said. “And she was very clearly and visibly upset. And she was in pain. I can’t remember what, but she was in a bit of pain. And I remember that’s why she went to the spa to get a massage. “
While Sanderson claims Paltrow met him on a novice ski slope and sped off, and is demanding $300,000 in compensation after suffering four broken ribs, a concussion and, he argues, lingering cognitive symptoms caused by the fall, counters Paltrow. She’s insisted it was Sanderson who smashed her, and she’s asking for a token dollar plus attorney’s fees.
Paltrow herself took the witness stand Friday and testified that in the moments following the accident, she wasn’t sure what exactly happened and she wondered if it was “a deliberate assault of a sexual nature.”
“So that was a quick thought that went through my mind as I tried to reconcile what happened,” Paltrow said. “I was skiing and two skis came in between my skis and pushed my legs apart and then a body pushed against me. And there was a very odd grunt, so my brain was trying to make sense of what was happening. I thought, “Is this a prank? Is someone doing something kinky? This is really, really weird. My mind was going really, really fast and I was trying to figure out what was happening.”
The sliding doors The actress said she yelled profanities at Sanderson, for which she later apologized.
“I said, ‘You hit me right in the f***ing back,’ and he said, ‘Oh, sorry, sorry, I’m sorry,'” Paltrow said. “I was pretty upset.”
Her lawyers have not yet decided whether they will call Falchuk to the witness stand.
