“I can’t believe it’s been a little over 25 years since great customer service was born at Good Burger!” Thompson said in a statement. “It made me so proud to be a part of something that so many generations of people have come to love, and to be back where it all began, working on the sequel, is surreal! I love performing with my brother Kel and can’t wait to show fans what these characters are up to since we last saw them.”
Good Burger was created as a sketch for the Nickelodeon series All That, in which Mitchell starred as Ed. It was then spun off into the 1997 film. It proved to be a box office success, grossing just under $24 million on a reported budget of $8 million. It achieved iconic status when Mitchell and Thompson reunited for a “Good Burger” sketch on The Tonight Show in 2015, and over the years have said they’re open to a new iteration of the film. Mitchell also appeared as Ed in the revival series All That in 2019.
According to the film’s official logline, “Dexter Reed (Thompson) has lost his luck after another of his inventions went awry. Ed (Mitchell) welcomes Dex to Good Burger with open arms and gives him his old job back. With a new crew working at Good Burger, Dex devises a plan to get back on his feet, but unfortunately jeopardizes the fate of Good Burger once again.”
Mitchell said, “Ed is one of those timeless characters that has brought so much joy and laughter to fans and it’s such a beautiful blessing to still be able to do so after all these years. It’s super awesome to come back and continue the stories of Dex, Ed and Good Burger for both the people who grew up watching TV and their kids.”
Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert, who co-wrote the original film and worked on All That, will write and executive produce the sequel. James III is also an author of the film. Phil Traill is directing. Nickelodeon Studios will produce. Production on the film for Nickelodeon Studios will be directed by Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, co-directors of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. Brittany Cope is executive producer at Nickelodeon.
“We’re excited to accept audience requests for more laughter and adventure with the ‘Good Burger’ crew,” said Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer of Paramount Streaming. “‘Good Burger 2’ will be a great addition to our 2023 programming schedule and is sure to feature everything that ‘All That’ fans and new viewers alike will enjoy.”
Thompson is represented by UTA and Michael Goldman. Mitchell is represented by UTA and Levity Live.
“‘Good Burger’ is such a popular movie that fans have come to appreciate for years,” said Phelan and Olin. “Packed with comedy, cameos and plenty of Easter eggs from the original, ‘Good Burger 2’ will bring nostalgia fans and a new generation of viewers together for another wild, hilarious ‘Good Burger’ adventure.”
This is the latest Nickelodeon property to be revived at Paramount+. The streamer also has the “iCarly” revival series, which has been extended for a third seasonas well as, among other things, an updated version of “Rugrats”.
